PLANT WITH US! GROW WITH US! REBUILD WITH US!
THE BAD NEWS: Ecuador's Forests are Rapidly VANISHING.
Ecuador has one of the world's highest rates of deforestation and is currently estimated to be 192,000 acres per year. The country also has South America's highest population density (45 people/sq. km.) as well as the highest rate of population growth averaging around 3% in recent decades. Combined, this places a high degree of development pressure on natural resources in the country.
Since the 1940's over 95% of western forests below 1000 m have been lost
Since the 1970's over 30% of Ecuador's Amazonian Forests have been lost
Over 46% of southern Ecuador's forest cover had been lost by 2008.
Since 1938 Ecuador has lost over 98% of its coastal forest.
EACH YEAR 192,000 ACRES OF FOREST ARE LOST IN ECUADOR.
LET'S GROW! DONATE NOW!THE GOOD NEWS: Jocotoco is REBUILDING the Unique Forests of ECUADOR.
JOCOTOCO has PLANTED OVER 1.6 MILLION TREES throughout our reserve network and within neighboring communities. Our skilled reforestation team has over 13 years of experience growing and planting 130 native species in different ecosystems. Jocotoco's success in restoring deforested landscapes has helped to bring back endangered species like the Pale-headed Brushfinch, El Oro Tapaculo and the El Oro Parakeet from the brink of extinction.
TREES PLANTED
1.6 million trees of 130 different native species planted and counting!
OUR RESTORATION STRATEGY
Reforestation programs last for 3 years, to ensure a high survival rate (well above 85%)
COST PER TREE
Average cost per tree $5
SPECIES
We focus on restoring habitats with native & threatened tree species.
TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS
From Chocó Rainforests to Dry Tumbesian Forests, we are restoring some of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots.
Jocotoco's Reforestation Program Benefits Biodiversity & Ecuadorian Communities!
From the Tumbesian dry forests of the pacific coast to the high altitude Polylepis forests, to the megadiverse cloud forests of southern Ecuador, Jocotoco reforests within its reserves and also works with neighboring communities. This dual approach to ecosystem conservation enables us to cocreate forest-friendly livelihood strategies that strengthen the protection of biodiversity. At the landscape level, we connect fragmented forest patches in and outside our reserves to restore ecosystems. We are using this method to build bird friendly coffee and cacao farms with our neighbors.
