UNOC 3 Blue Zone Side Event
Successful Implementation of Ecuador's Hermandad Marine Reserve: when all the pieces of the puzzle are in place
This panel-style event will feature interventions and discussions on Ecuadors approach to establishing and managing the Hermandad Marine Reserve. This MPA expanded Ecuadors marine protection by 5%, advancing SDG 14 and the 2030 Agenda while strengthening connectivity between two key ETP areas. The discussion covers key steps, including inclusive participation, designation, governance, management plan development, a fully operational financing mechanism (the largest debt swap for nature), sustainability commitments, interagency coordination, and its baseline for long-term monitoring. Led by Ecuadors Ministry of Environment and the Galápagos National Park Directorate, ministers, top officials, and stakeholders will share best practices for scaling this MPA dream regionally and outlining the next five years, including voluntary commitments.
Date: June 12th
Room: Blue Zone Room 2
Time: 10:30 - 11:45
OCEAN COMMITMENTS:
The Government of Ecuador, through the Ministry of Environment will launch a commitment to include the Hermandad Marine Reserve as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve by the end of 2025. Given the reserves nature as an oceanic protected area within Ecuadors EEZ, this designation will be a milestone in advancing global marine conservation. UNESCO Biosphere Reserves provide a framework to balance conservation, sustainable use, and scientific research, making them instrumental in achieving long-term marine and coastal ecosystem management. This commitment will be uploaded to the Voluntary Ocean Commitments database within the Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Management Community of Action, reinforcing Ecuadors dedication to safeguarding biodiversity, strengthening regional connectivity, and promoting sustainable development in the ETP.
