The dock is named in honor of Godfrey Merlen, a revered figure in Galapagos conservation. This event coincides with the one-year anniversary of Merlen's passing and the 65th anniversary of the Galapagos National Park.
Arturo Izurieta, Director of the Galapagos National Park added, "Behind this dock is the name of a man who set an example for us in protecting our land. With this dock, Godfrey's legacy continues to inspire environmental stewardship across the archipelago." For over fifty years, he was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the region and his expertise in marine life. He championed marine conservation and played a crucial role in the approval of the Special Galapagos Law and the establishment of the Marine Reserve.
The enhancement of the pier has been a crucial project to improve the operability and safety of the port facilities. It is a structure designed specifically to meet the operational conditions and needs of the Galapagos National Park Directorate. The pier now complies with safety regulations and was constructed in adherence to environmental best practices. Key features include reinforced concrete elements for durability, an access ramp for heavy vehicles, and various safety and aesthetic enhancements. The project also proudly displays the national park's logo, reinforcing its visual identity and commitment to conservation.
Eliécer Cruz, Director of the Galapagos Program Jocotoco Conservation Foundation said, "As we celebrate the 65th anniversary of this magnificent National Park, we are proud to officially hand over this vital dock. This essential infrastructure will support all national park operations, including transportation for logistics, research operations, cargo, and fuel supply for control and monitoring activities. The enhancement of the pier not only improves the marine operations of the environmental authority in Galápagos, but also symbolizes our unwavering commitment to the conservation and protection of these islands."
Patricia León, Director of the Bezos Earth Fund Galapagos Office said, "We are pleased to provide comprehensive support to the efforts of the Ecuadorian Government to effectively protect the Galapagos and Hermandad Marine Reserves."
Established on July 4th, 1959, the Galapagos National Park was the first national park in Ecuador and remains one of the most iconic protected areas in the world. It was created to preserve the unique biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. The park's management has continually evolved to address conservation challenges, and this new dock represents the ongoing commitment to protecting this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations.
