Strengthening Environmental Regulations in the Galapagos Islands

26 Feb 2024
In a joint initiative led by the Jocotoco Foundation, WildAid and the Galapagos National Park Directorate, the legal capacity-building workshop for administrative sanctioning processes and contentious administrative judicial processes was successfully conducted during the week of February 22.

This 4-day activity is part of the planned actions under the GEF7 project, funded by CAF and GEF, with the aim of comprehensively strengthening the control and surveillance program of the Galapagos National Park.

The workshop aimed to enhance the legal skills of competent authorities in the protection of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, lawyers, and marine control personnel, in order to ensure more effective processes and satisfactory results in the application of environmental regulations in the Galapagos.

"During the training, a thorough assessment of strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities was carried out to achieve a more effective application of sanctioning powers. The importance of establishing a standard format for patrol technical reports was highlighted, promoting internal coordination and collaboration with other related institutions," said Paola Sangolquí, marine coordinator of the Galapagos Program at the Jocotoco Conservation Foundation.

The program addressed key topics, including the analysis of violations, the scope of application of the Administrative Organic Code, sanctioning administrative procedures, and other fundamental areas for the efficient application of environmental regulations in the region. "Experiences were shared, and group solutions to real problems were sought," mentioned Diana Vinueza, marine coordinator of WildAid.

This joint effort reflects the commitment of the organizations involved in the preservation and protection of the unique ecosystem of the Galápagos Islands. "By strengthening the legal and operational capacities of park rangers, environmental police, and Ecuadorian Navy mariners, we aim to ensure more effective control and surveillance, thus contributing to the conservation of this invaluable natural reserve," added Sangolquí.
