Official statement

Because of the declaration of internal armed conflict in Ecuador, we want to inform you about the security situation in our reserves y lodges.

Dear Jocotoco supporter,

Ecuador has experienced an increase in violence since 2021, reaching its most critical point last year because of the presence of international drug trafficking cartels, which operate through criminal gangs.

In this context, President Daniel Noboa launched a security strategy that caused some reactions. On January 8, following the escape of one of the leaders of a highly dangerous criminal gang, he declared a state of emergency for 60 days. On January 9, due to severe attacks against public and private institutions, he declared the existence of an internal armed conflict and authorized military action against these groups, whom he declared as terrorists. Then, he carried out several control operations and met with the diplomatic corps and international organizations accredited in Ecuador.

Faced with this situation, Fundación Jocotoco has taken the necessary measures to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors. We have reinforced security protocols in our reserves and lodges and are constantly monitoring the news and the status of roads and airports to take timely action.

So far, there have been no incidents, and we are closely monitoring the situation and adapting our operations accordingly. Because our reserves are in rural areas, we maintain a good relationship with the nearby communities and have not been directly affected by insecurity.

Our conservation work and visitor services continue. We are confident that the country will overcome this challenge because, beyond this security crisis, Ecuador represents life, development, a peaceful and democratic culture, and rich biodiversity.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support, which is essential to continue protecting the most vulnerable habitats and species through our conservation network in the country

Sincerely,

Dr. Martin Schaefer
