On October 11th, we transferred 20 confiscated Red-Masked Parakeets (Psittacara erythrogenys) from the Arenillas Zoo to a pre-adaptation and release cage in Buenaventura Reserve. The 20 parakeets were previously assessed for their suitability to be re-introduced into the wild by Dr. Julio Baquerizo. He performed medical check ups prior to the transfer the birds in ortder to prevent the introduction of diseases into their new environment.
We will keep the Red-Masked Parakeets for an extended period of 1 to 2 months in the pre-adaptation cage depending on their capabilities of flight and their adjustment to naturalfood items. We will perform a soft release of confiscated birds. The soft release of the birds implies that we will offer food inside the cage or on its outside for as long as parrot individuals depend on it.
