Floreana´s Farmers are the first beneficiaries of the ecological restoration project.

14 agricultural producers from Floreana Island, in the Galapagos, received and installed metal containers for their farms to facilitate the feeding of the island's production animals.

Each container stores up to 36 cubic meters of pasture and fodder silos. In this way, Jocotoco is fulfilling the objective that each farm has three containers.

This is one of the actions foreseen in the Plan for the Management of Production Animals and Agriculture of the Floreana Island Ecological Restoration Project that Fundación Jocotoco is executing as part of the technical assistance that we offer to the Galapagos National Park Directorate.

It´s important to highlight that the containers are free of charge, and have a useful life of 20 years. The containers will serve to safely store the feed (food for animals prepared by a mixture of raw materials in order to achieve nutritious and healthy food) and avoid damage from rodents. This activity is vital to ensure that Floreana´s farmers have enough food for production animals once the process of eradicating invasive species on the island begins.

These actions are vital for the development of new and better practices in the management of production animals in Floreana island, including that animals cannot be freely grazed in the protected area. Therefore, the dispersion of seeds or other invasive species will be avoided, or in the case of chickens, it will avoid being fed by native predators that will be reintroduced to the island again.
