Did you know that with only 11 cm (4.3 inches) long and less than 9 grams in weight, the Cerulean Warbler flies every year from North America to the tropical lands of South America, fleeing the harsh winter of the north?

Today we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, which is why we want to talk about a warbler.

For a non-expert eye, this bird species is one of many. However, its bluish, grayish and white colors, its loud song, its small size, and its difficulty in watching it high up in the tree canopies make the Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerúlea) a highly coveted bird species for birdwatchers.

That's why expert eyes "suffer" to watch or photograph this particular species that tend to move quickly in the heights of the trees.

Along with Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru, Ecuador is one of their places of refuge from the cold winter. In the Napo Province, the forest of our Narupa reserve is the temporary home of many Cerulean Warblers every year.

But, this is not the only species that undertake these long journeys of thousands of kilometers round trip from the northern hemisphere. There are many more, and they are often called boreal migratory birds.

Did you know that others migrate from the south winter or even between the tropics? What would those birds be called? Keep reading, and you will find out.

Without a doubt, nature amazes us every day with its strength and ability to adapt. However, men's hands have threatened the habitat of many of these birds at risk. Both, in their nesting and their migration sites, as is the case of the Cerulean Warbler.

For this reason, Fundacion Jocotoco, with the support of sibling NGOs, has programs aimed at monitoring migratory birds and preserving their habitat, as is the case of the Narupa reserve.

If you found this information interesting or didn't know, comment and share this post. Oh! And about the denominations of the other migratory birds, here is the answer:

  • Austral migrants are the birds who migrate from the southern hemisphere to the tropics.
  • Intertropical migrants are the birds that move latitudinally.
