The research corroborates the need to expand the altitudinal span in the reserves wherever possible to guarantee sufficient habitat for species moving uphill due to global warming.
A new article in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution shows an increase in temperature over 7 years in our Yanacocha reserve. The study demonstrates a progressive increment of tussock grasses and growth forms typical of lower elevations in the Andean páramo, leading to a significant decrease in species diversity. Shrubs invade the grass-dominated páramo ecosystem.
The research corroborates the need to expand the altitudinal span in the reserves wherever possible to guarantee sufficient habitat for species moving uphill due to global warming. Jocotoco has increased the elevational span of some of our reserves, such as Buenaventura, by adding high-elevation properties.
