After many years, a Spectacled Bear was sighted in the Narupa reserve
Our recent expansion of Narupa Reserve created a refuge for this and other Spectacled Bears.

Recent news light up our hope. A Spectacled Bear roams our Narupa reserve. This species is the only native bear in South America and the last remaining of the short-faced bears. This is further evidence of their return to Narupa after a sighting of a bear cub by our park guards earlier this year. Hence, it elucidates the importance of connecting fragmented forests and building natural corridors that safeguard enough habitat for large, threatened species.

The Spectacled Bear is vulnerable throughout its Andean range, threatened by the loss of habitat and hunting. Our recent expansion of Narupa Reserve (almost 3,000 acres / 1,200 ha since 2017) created a refuge for this and other Spectacled Bears.

The return of the bears to Narupa is your success story, and if you want to help us expand the reserve, please donate. We like to share a virtual bear hug with all those who helped us increase Narupa to celebrate!
