This unique ecosystem, where wonderful Ceiba trees predominate, is home to more than 190 bird species, some endemic to the Tumbesian region.

This year Jorupe reserve has grown. Currently, about 1600 hectares of Tumbesian forest, ranging from 400-2000m above sea level, are protected. This reserve, located in the province of Loja, is characterized by dry deciduous forest, which means that it loses its leaves in summer but turns green in winter with the seasonal rains.

This unique ecosystem, where wonderful Ceiba trees predominate, is home to more than 190 bird species. Regional endemics include Pale-browed Tinamou, Gray-cheeked Parakeet, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Blackish-headed Spinetail and the flagship White-tailed Jay. Jorupe is the only Ecuadorian reserve that protects these species and plays a unique role in the conservation of Ecuador's natural heritage. Furthermore, the forests of our reserve protect the micro-basin of the Jorupe River, which also provides water to the rice fields of the local community. In the future, we even hope to provide water to the city of Macará.
