Blue-throated Hillstar nest discovery!

We are very excited with the discovery of an active nest of the Blue-throated Hillstar (Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus) near our new Cerro de Arcos reserve. Although, this bird forages in Chuquiragua and Achupalla flowers, it was found nesting on a rocky surface, inside a cave. Our park guard is now actively searching for more nests.
The finding made by researcher Paúl Molina confirms the importance of this ecosystem, which is characterized by a landscape of fascinating rock formations. There is less than five nests known and it is clear that this habitat is key to the survival of this small hummingbird. This bird is an endemic species to Ecuador and considered to be among the rarest in the world!
The protection of this species and its habitat is a joint effort by Fundación Jocotoco, Rainforest Trust, and American Birding Conservancy (ABC).
