Black-breasted Puffleg at Yanacocha reserve!
In the last two months, up to five individuals of Black-Breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) have been recorded at four different sites within our Yanacocha reserve. This year we started a new project with the National Geographic Society focusing on habitat enrichment for the puffleg, protection and restoration. These activities will be carried out together with local communities in the region.
A monitoring scheme is presented to assess the conservation status of the critically endangered populations of this hummingbird. We have already started with the construction of a greenhouse that we will use to grow the puffleg's favorite native plants and flowers which are considered crucial for its survival. These plants include Macleania cf. rupestris, Disterigma acuminatum, Fuchsia vulcanica, Fuchsia ayavacensis, Fuchsia vulcanica, Palicourea fuchsioides and Salvia quitensis.
