Iguiñaro was released at our Chakana Reserve
Meet Iguiñaro, an Andean Condor rescued by the inhabitants of El Quinche. A family found this condor injured by a shutgun last month and called the Guayllabamba Zoo to report it.
This condor was named after the place where it was found wounded, at Iguiñaro, El Quinche. After several weeks of medical checks and treatment the individual recovered. Thanks to the collaboration of The Peregrin Fund and Fundación Condor Andino the condor was marked to track it via satellite. Finally, we released it at our Chakana Reserve the past Saturday 30th of May.
Our Chakana Reserve is the ideal place for such releases because it offers all the conditions for this condor to recover and adapt to the wild again. It was declared "Condor Sanctuary" in 2012 because it harbors the largest population in the country. Furthermore, we protect the most important roosting sites nationally. We are also located close to other protected areas, such as Antisana Reserve, Cotopaxi National Park and Cayambe Coca National Park. More importantly, there are enough food sources within our reserve. We are confident that Iguiñaro will be safe at Chakana.
