Esmeraldas Woodstar nests
Byron Delgado and René Zambrano, our park rangers in Ayampe Reserve discovered an Esmeraldas Woodstar nest at the beginning of the year. This is great news because we have not spotted nests of this species at our reserve for more than five years!
This species is endemic to Ecuador and is endangered. It is the second smallest hummingbird worldwide and the emblematic bird of Las Tunas community. That is why our park rangers, part of the local community, are particularly excited! During the last few months our team monitored the activity of the nest and the behavior of the chicks. More importantly, this particular nest provided a second successful clutch in April. This is the first time this phenomenon is observed by our park rangers in Ayampe. We look forward to finding more nests in our reserve?
