Red-masked Parakeet release in Buenaventura
Thanks to the support of Loro Parque Fundación, on February 4th, we released 19 Red-masked Parakeets in our Buenaventura Reserve.

Thanks to the support of Loro Parque Fundación, on February 4th, we released 19 Red-masked Parakeets in our Buenaventura Reserve. Even though this species is classified as near threatened, its population has decreased significantly (only 10% of the past century's population remains). Therefore, it is important to work with the community in conservation projects and rescue the ones sold as pets.

The released parakeets were rescued by the Ministry of Environment and transferred to the Arenillas Zoo, where they spent a phase of medical examinations and quarantine. After this period, they were relocated to the pre-release cage in Buenaventura where they spent one month adapting to a diet made of local fruits.

The Manager of Arenillas Zoo, and the authorities of the Ministry of Environment, Municipality of Las Piñas and El Oro province attended the release event. This project goes hand in hand with an environmental awareness campaign against pet trade in the community.

You can learn more about the event here (Spanish), and support our expansion campaign here.
