Great news for the Great Green Macaw!
We have wonderful news! One of the Great Green Macaws we released in 2018 was spotted last month at Las Balsas (45km from our Ayampe reserve). We are sure it is one of our birds because it has a radio collar. The Great Green Macaws that we have released in the past few years, thanks to the support of Loro Parque Fundación and Fundación de Rescate Jambelí, were born in captivity from individuals that have been rescued. Seeing this bird in Las Balsas shows evidence that it has adapted successfully in the wild, which is a major milestone for the project.
Wait! There's more!
We have spotted 10 individuals in a remote valley including our released macaw! We have also found a nest (photo above) in Las Balsas' protected forest, and we have already heard the first calls of the chick(s). Our parkguard Patricio Reyes is monitoring the nest and has installed a camera trap in front of it. We will keep you posted on how this incredible story unravels.
