Jocotoco celebrates National Condor Day
Every July 7th, the Andean Condor is commemorated in Ecuador. This is our national bird, which is critically endangered in the country, with only 150 individuals in the wild. Jocotoco conserves one of the key nesting and roosting places of this species in our Chakana reserve, Hacienda Antisanilla, with more than 40 individuals registered.
Due to the importance of Jocotoco's work towards Condor conservation, Jocotours hosted a special touristic event. Our full-day trip for 18 people was fully booked.
Additionally, Jocotoco was invited to be part of an educational fair in the city of Latacunga, capital of Cotopaxi province. Our Research Coordinator José León participated in the fair to inform people about the role of the Condor as the main scavenger of the High Andes. Our education is crucial as poaching and poisoning are still happening in the province of Cotopaxi.
