The Global Big Day is an event celebrated amongst bird-watchers worldwide which consists on documenting the maximum number of bird species seen in 24 hours. According to ebird, this year more than 32.500 people of 171 countries registered 6.816 species (2/3rds of the world's bird diversity) on this date, establishing a new world record for the number of bird-watchers on a single day.
Our Jocotoco team participated in this contest at Yanacocha, Tapichalaca, Ayampe, and Narupa reserves. They also visited Cerro de Arcos where the Blue-throated Hillstar hummingbird was recently discovered in 2018. This year Ecuador ranked third in the list worldwide, which is incredible considering its size compared to other countries.
