Fundación Jocotoco and Rainforest Connection (RFCx) have worked together to monitor part of the Canande reserve and protect the Choco, one of the five most important and threatened hotspots of biodiversity in the world. RFCx created the world's first scalable real-time acoustic system to monitor the forest's soundscapes 365 days a year. It is possible to listen to the sounds of nature live with a link. Through this mobile technology it is possible to detect illegal activities such as logging and deforestation, and be able to respond quickly and accurately.

This devices are called RFCx Guardians and they send real-time alerts to our rangers on the ground to investigate potential threats. This system is based on recycled mobile phones that are constantly charged through solar panels installed in the tree canopy. In this initial phase, we'll install 10 RFCx Guardians and cover remote areas that cannot be easily reached by our park rangers.
