On November 26, we relocated 6 individuals of the Great Green Macaw from Jambeli Rescue Center to Ayampe Reserve.

These birds were born and raised in captivity. Confined to a kennel they traveled 3 hours by car, the transfer team continued on foot for 40 minutes until they arrived at the cage that was designed specifically for them. All the time, a vet was present to monitor their well-being.

A few minutes after their arrival, the new macaws were already flying in our pre-release cage and were interacting with the 2 Macaws that had already in this cage. One of these Macaws was rescued with the help of a little girl from the community of Río Blanco, who participated in a workshop organized by Fundación Jocotoco at her school. She received a certificate as a "Macaw Protector ".

The 8 inmates will remain in the reserve for at least 3 months until they got habituated to a diet of only those wild fruits that they will find in the forests surrounding them. They also need to train their flight muscles in the large pre-release cage, in order to be able to escape from predators such as hawk-eagles. We will keep you informed about their release in the near future!
